INVOLVE
What is Involve?
Involve is a web and mobile app created as a dynamic tool for collecting exploratory data on a large scale. With Involve, citizens, practitioners, experts, and partners are invited to share their knowledge in an accessible and intuitive way that can be customized to the individual—through images, voice messages, or text responses.
Involve is designed to understand and follow complex issues through the experiences of those who work with or experience the problem – right where they are.
The insights can be transformed into structured knowledge using the Model for wicked . Statements from participants are visualized and grouped into maps that show the problem landscape from the bottom up: What experiences and understandings shape how the problem is perceived? What are the dominant perspectives? Are there competing problem definitions? What does the range of proposed solutions look like, and who points to what in particular?
Why is Involve needed?
Involve is an alternative to traditional tools that focuses on collecting in-depth and meaningful data. Involve is designed to:
Counteract fatigue and mistrust
The willingness of the public to participate in engagement processes is declining. This is primarily because citizens are often only asked to choose between problem understandings and proposed solutions that have been defined in advance. In addition, there is often a perception that contributions are neither heard nor translated into action. This leads to fatigue and mistrust.
Involve focuses instead on creating processes where open answers are valued and where there is transparency in how they are used in the decision-making process.
Lower the barrier to participation
Traditional methods—questionnaires, opinion polls, town hall meetings, public forums—tend to favor those who are comfortable expressing themselves precisely in writing or speaking in public. This excludes many people. To broaden participation, Involve is designed to meet people where they are and give them the opportunity to contribute in ways that feel natural. That's why Involve lets users simply record audio messages, take a photo, or write freely – this lowers the threshold and makes it easier for everyone to have their say.
Overcome polarization with experience-based knowledge
Engagement that focuses on attitudes often reinforces polarization: asking "What do you think?" typically pushes people further into entrenched positions. When people are invited to share their concrete experiences with a topic, however, we gain access to deeper and more nuanced knowledge. Involve supports experience-based contributions that anchor the mapping in the realities of everyday life rather than in abstract dividing lines or polarized positions.
Core functions
Involve is easy to use – both for those conducting research and for citizens who want to share their knowledge. It should be intuitive and accessible for everyone, regardless of age, background, and technical skills, to contribute their perspectives. That is why Involve is designed with:
Various media inputs: Participants can choose whether they want to answer questions via audio messages or text messages, and they can be asked to take photos or select images from their camera roll.
Integrated transcription: Audio messages are automatically and instantly converted to text using integrated AI transcription. Participants can review and edit the transcription to ensure it accurately reflects the message.
Mobile and web version: Not everyone has the desire, time, or opportunity to download a mobile app. Therefore, participants can also respond to surveys through our web app via a creation link—regardless of whether they prefer to write or record audio messages.
Easy setup for project managers: Creating projects and onboarding participants is simple and quick. To motivate participants, it is also possible to frame the survey with a video. In addition, it is easy to follow the project and export data directly from a module in the web browser.
Flexible framework for groups, projects, and tasks: Project managers can organize different participants into groups, projects, and tasks. This opens up many possibilities for using Involve.
Respect for privacy: Project managers can moderate user contributions before they are displayed to others. If participants are required to take or upload photos as part of a task, faces are automatically recognized and blurred.
Security: Involve is fully GDPR compliant and gives users control over their data.
How was Involve developed?
Involve was developed based on open source research and development from the Urban Belonging Project, led by Professor Anders Koed Madsen (DTU) and INVI's Director of Research and Development, Sofie Burgos-Thorsen, during her time as a researcher at Aalborg University – in collaboration with partners across research and industry.
Launched in 2022, the Urban Belonging App was among the first to rethink data collection and citizen engagement by using digital and mobile technologies to enable large-scale qualitative data collection. Its development and application have been described in peer-reviewed scientific articles and received an EU Citizen Science Award in 2023.
Involve builds on this foundation with new features and capabilities designed to support democratic innovation. The app was developed by INVI as part of our mission as an independent think tank and aims to ensure that more people can contribute meaningfully to how society deals with complex "wicked ."
Whereas the Urban Belonging App was developed for—and continues to be used in—urban research and urban planning, Involve extends this work to a broader political and decision-making context. Here, the app makes it possible to systematically collect and analyze qualitative, local, and ethnographic data on a large scale.
Finally, we are proud to contribute to the development of open source research tools in Denmark. Although the entire Involve code base is not publicly available, we actively contribute to the Urban Belonging ecosystem when new features or improvements have broader public value.
What can Involve teach you?
Involve can be used in a wide range of contexts—the only limit is your imagination. It's about what the insights should inform, who should be involved, and how long a problem should be monitored. Involve is used in areas such as:
Public policy, laws, and reforms: How do key citizens, professionals, and experts understand problems and solutions, and are there any controversies between them? These are just some of the insights that a survey via Invovle can provide prior to a bill, reforms, planning processes, or hearings. Similarly, it is particularly suitable for following the development of new political initiatives.
Foundations and NGOs: How do specific core groups view your organization, or how do they understand a particular issue? Involve can help you understand citizens' perspectives, identify new narratives, and build bridges in polarized debates.
Education and research: Involve is an innovative alternative to traditional data collection tools and can assist with the collection and analysis of large-scale qualitative/quantitative hybrid data.
Transnational projects: With its multilingual transcription technology, Involve can support transnational projects across countries with scalable, structured dialogue tools.
